Geometry Party

Some of the girls in my Geometry class stopped by our house the night before their big Geometry test. We started out studying, and then things got a little silly.


Maybe I shouldn't have brought out the Cadbury chocolate bar!

Nairobi National Park's Animal Orphanage

The Nairobi National Park also has an animal orphanage, except these animals are not reintroduced into the wild. We'd heard you could go in and pet the cheetahs, so we headed there first. These are three of four cubs they currently have. We were allowed in with them for a short time. They really liked Richard! He could make them purr like kittens! Aren't they beautiful? Our guide told us that they are quite docile, even in the wild. They're not as soft and cuddly as they look, though. Their fur is rough, but one interesting thing is that their spots are raised. From Fearless to Fearful and Back

It’s incredible how our perception of risk changes with age and time on the field.   My first overseas appointment was in the middle of my college years.  I didn’t travel far from home, just taking a two-hour flight to Central America where I’d be teaching English at a primary school.  I was young and naïve, and moved into a house with five other female volunteers and very little adult supervision.  We were all a bit overwhelmed by the responsibility and the independence.  Can you spell trouble? We planned weekend trips on buses to cities we’d never been to and went about our life in this small Honduran town as if we’d never left the United States.  For example, my friend and I would go running through town in our shorts and T-shirts, never once thinking about how no respectable Honduran woman would be caught dead doing that. We were even less concerned for our safety.  Needless to say, we endured groping on the street and didn’t quite no how to hand...

Mt. Longonot, Part 2

The ascent was very steep. I stayed back with the really slow climbers. Once we reached the top, we stopped to rest. You can see the crater's rim in the background. We hiked to the point you see in the distance and ate lunch there. I took this picture as we walked around the crater's edge. Down in the crater is a forest. There are zebras, giraffes, buffalos, hartebeests, and even leopards living there. We didn't go down into the crater. I'm not sure you can! Walking along the edge was enough for me. I had a hard time walking along without feeling scared of falling of the edge!
